Spring has officially sprung in Ohio, and with it, the inevitable return of rain and recreational sports. The Ohio Department of Transportation took to social media to deliver a seasonal safety advisory to Ohioans packing their vehicles with necessities for unpredictable weather and athletic pursuits. "As the spring season progresses, you may be reintroducing items into your car like umbrellas and rain boots for those April showers and sports equipment and gear for spring leagues," their post read.
Alongside these seasonal reminders, the department partnered with Buckle Up for Life, the national car safety program from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Toyota, to emphasize the importance of securing in-vehicle items. They cautioned that if not properly stowed, sporting goods and weather gear could become risky projectiles during a sudden stop or crash. Their advice resonates as families prepare for the flurry of activities characteristic of the season and the haste that often accompanies it.
Safety concerns increase as community sports leagues kick off, seeing vehicles frequently packed with cleats, bats, balls, and additional gear. These items are inevitable accessories to the sporting life, yet they hold a hidden danger. "Our friends at Buckle Up for Life are here with a friendly reminder: if not securely stowed in your vehicle, these items could become projectiles," says the Ohio Department of Transportation. The projection and transformation of mundane gear into dangerous objects are often an overlooked aspect of road safety.
