Following unanimous support from the Ohio House of Representatives, House Bill 65, dubbed the Agriculture Appreciation Act, has officially been passed. As reported by Ohio House, this legislation establishes several key agricultural days, including FFA Week, 4-H Week, and National Farmers Market Week.
State Representative Kevin Ritter, representing the 94th House District and a key supporter of the bill, has expressed his satisfaction with the act’s passage. The Agriculture Appreciation Act’s enactment is expected to bolster recognition of Ohio’s significant farming community and its contribution to the state’s economy. According to Ritter, per an Ohio House news release, "Agriculture plays a very important role in the 94th House District." He was "pleased to support House Bill 65, which recognizes the many Ohioans that work in this sector, the state’s vital farming community and the industry’s substantial impact on our economy." The act honors a profession and emphasizes the sector's over $100 billion economic impact and employment of one out of seven Ohioans.
The designated agricultural days spread throughout the year will recognize varied facets of the industry, from soil health to stormwater awareness. Each has its designated period: FFA Week takes place the last full week of February, while 4-H Week rounds off with the week ending on the second Saturday of March. As summer peaks, National Farmers Market Week is marked during the first full week of August. In contrast, Ohio Soil Health Week will now happen during the second full week of November, followed by Stormwater Awareness Week in October. The act also codifies Agriculture Day on March 21st and Farmer’s Day on October 12th.
