An Oxnard man has been found guilty of several counts of child molestation, as the Ventura County District Attorney's office announced. John Edward Kalil, aged 28, was convicted on Monday, after a jury trial. According to a press release issued by the district attorney's office, Kalil faced six felony charges related to incidents that occurred between 2014 and 2020, involving two victims, both under the age of 14 at the time of the abuse.
The crimes were committed in the home Kalil shared with the victims. Both came forward following another family member's arrest for alleged sexual abuse, suggesting a grim pattern within the family. With a relationship that gave him access to the victims, Kalil's actions were flagged with special allegations for multiple victims and substantial sexual conduct. Despite being convicted of sexually abusing teenagers, Kalil remains in custody and awaits sentencing on June 6, which could result in a 150-year-to-life prison sentence.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Stuart Gardner, part of the Sexual Assault Unit, prosecuted the case, highlighting the severe impact on the survivors. "The teenage victims were not only sexually abused by the defendant but are also alleged victims in a pending sexual abuse case against another family member,” Gardner was quoted in the press release. The conviction serves as a starting point for the victims' healing and recovery process, although complete closure may forever remain elusive. Kalil's verdict sends a strong message about the justice system's stance on such heinous crimes.
The sentencing scheduled for early June will conclude the legal proceeding of a troubling case that has broken the veneer of a typical Oxnard community.
