A 14-year-old student from Pinewood Middle School has been arrested following reports of a threat made via Snapchat against their educational institution, as detailed by local law enforcement. According to a statement obtained by FOX 17, the Kent County Sheriff's Office received a tip through OK2SAY, Michigan's confidential tip line, leading them to initiate an investigation.
The inquiry, spanning over Easter Sunday, resulted in detectives zeroing in on the teen, who was interviewed and subsequently detained before noon on Monday. Looking for any firearms at the student's home, as noted by WWMT, detectives conducted a thorough search; however, the search came up empty.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office emphasized the gravity with which they consider such threats, stating, "This is a reminder that the Kent County Sheriff’s Office takes all threats—especially those involving schools—very seriously," according to information provided by WZZM 13. The seriousness of such matters is reflected in their rigorous investigative approach and the collaboration between deputies, detectives, and school partners to maintain a safe community.
Authorities are reminding the public that they can safely report concerning content through OK2SAY, which helped resolve this incident. Deputies are thankful it ended peacefully, but they urge parents to talk with their kids about using social media responsibly. Even "jokes" about threats can lead to serious consequences, as reported by WWMT. Parents are encouraged to teach their children the dangers of reckless online behavior and the importance of speaking up when they see something alarming.
