A Pittsburgh-area man is now facing a myriad of charges, including animal cruelty and neglect, for leaving three dogs to die in squalid conditions at a home in East Deer Township. As reported by CBS News Pittsburgh, authorities executed an eviction notice at the residence of Christopher Edmunds last Thursday, where they discovered the three canine victims in what was described as "deplorable conditions."
In an unfortunate revelation, the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office found the dogs had been left without water despite some food being scattered throughout the premises. Christopher Edmunds was taken into custody Tuesday evening following the eviction process and later housed at the Allegheny County Jail. In a statement detailed by CBS News Pittsburgh, Sheriff Kevin Kraus commended the coordinated rescue effort, stating, "Without the coordinated effort it is almost certain that these three dogs would not be alive today." Kraus also highlighted the participation of Animal Friends and Big Easy Dog Daze in aiding the animals' recovery.
Details reported by WPXI included Sheriff Kraus expressing his dismay at the situation, calling it a "disgusting situation" and noting the challenges his deputies faced, as they were unsure of the temperament of the dogs within the home. Additionally, Kraus elucidated on their determination to find a place for the dogs that wouldn't result in their euthanization, emphasizing the commitment to the animals’ welfare.
Furthermore, TribLIVE reported that deputies and officials from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency were met with the smell of dog feces and the sound of barking upon their attempt to evict Edmunds. Upon entering, they found a white, long-haired dog and two Rottweilers, all of which were covered in feces but appeared to be in good health. Edmunds allegedly left the dogs a week prior and failed to provide for their basic needs adequately. He faces six counts of animal cruelty and 13 counts of neglect of animals, as per the filed online court documents.
