To tackle the persistent issue of traffic-related fatalities, Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey has introduced the 2025 Vision Zero Memorandum, setting forth a strategy to improve safety on city streets significantly. The memorandum, a result of the collaborative efforts by the city's Vision Zero Intergovernmental Working Group, highlights the progress made since the city's formal adoption of the Vision Zero initiative in March 2024. The ultimate goal is clear: reducing traffic fatalities to zero and increasing the protection of city residents and visitors alike.

According to the City of Pittsburgh, coalescing around this objective, the working group initiated in April 2024 meets every quarter. It encompasses a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from the Mayor's Office and the City Council. Further actors include the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, Department of Public Works, and Department of City Planning, to name but a few, all joining hands to address the underlying causes of traffic incidents that result in serious injuries or deaths.

Pittsburgh's adoption of the Vision Zero strategy promises to prioritize human life in the traffic system. By integrating input from various departments, such as Public Safety, Police, Innovation and Performance, and regional entities, including Allegheny County, Pittsburgh Parking Authority, and Pittsburgh Regional Transit, among others, the initiative seeks to create safer roads for every mode of transportation.

Residents are encouraged to engage deeply with the ongoing safety discourse. The memorandum is available for public review on the Vision Zero Engage Page and will be presented at the City Council Post Agenda meeting scheduled for April 8th.
