Pittsburgh's culinary scene has earned national recognition, with Fet-Fisk Restaurant and Bar in Bloomfield securing a finalist position for Best New Restaurant in the prestigious 2025 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards. Initially known for their innovative Monday pop-up dinners, a brick-and-mortar location was established in 2024, offering a menu focused on seasonal regional produce, sustainably sourced seafood, and meats.
In addition to Fet-Fisk's recognition, Chad Houser, founder and CEO of Cafe Momentum, has been nominated for the Humanitarian of the Year Award—a testament to the nonprofit's commitment to helping justice-involved teenagers gain culinary industry skills, as highlighted by CBS News Pittsburgh. Eater, in their coverage, further emphasized the significance of the awards, noting that they mark the fifth anniversary since the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a monumental impact on the restaurant industry, including the cancellation of the James Beard ceremonies in 2020 and 2021, and inspiring subsequent restructuring of the awards to enhance diversity and inclusivity within its ranks.
The James Beard Foundation itself took the opportunity to highlight the evolution of the awards by introducing three new categories to their 2025 slate: Best New Bar, Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, and Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service. As per their official announcement, these categories aim to acknowledge a broader spectrum of excellence within the restaurant and hospitality industries.
