April in Placer County is not just about the bloom of spring, but also a period for planting seeds of a different sort—with the proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, the local community is committing to a flurry of activities aimed at promoting the welfare of its youngest members. In the words of MDIC Coordinator Jessica Waterford, "Placer County continues to lead with compassion and collaboration when it comes to protecting children,” as reported by Placer County.
The month's activities manifest not only as educational outreach, but as Pinwheel Planting Days and Wear Blue Day—a visual stand against child abuse. Moreover, a highlight will be the Child & Family Resource Fair on April 23, featuring everything from free diapers to a bike and badge ride-along. The emphasis is clear: these events are not cornerstones set in silence, but part of a public outcry against the scourge of child abuse, and a community coming together to aid those in need, and to empower families.
The county's Child Abuse Prevention Council, a melding of various organizations across sectors including child welfare, justice, and education, stands behind this concerted effort. Twylla Abrahamson, Children’s System of Care Director, encapsulated the approach: "We all want kids to grow up feeling safe, supported, and connected,” as she told Placer County. "This month is a good time to talk about how simple things—like being present, listening, and showing you care—can help prevent abuse and build stronger communities for our kids."
Residents are encouraged to attend workshops on healthy family habits and internet safety for kids at the April 23 event. Online registration is available to help participants prepare for these important topics. The #PassThePinwheel campaign also raises awareness with every share.
