In a move that is both novel and steeped in local tradition, the Port of Milwaukee is set to take over an abandoned boat by invoking its power of eminent domain, as per an announcement from Harbor Commissioner Alderman Peter Burgelis. The vessel is to be converted into a sheepshead-themed floating casino named "The Port of Jackpot," according to a press release from the city's official website.
Alderman Burgelis expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "The Port of Milwaukee plays a crucial role in our city’s economy, and this initiative will allow us to create an innovative solution that both entertains and supports local development," as mentioned in the same press release. However, some critics question the use of eminent domain for such an endeavor, even as proponents applaud the innovative reuse of an otherwise derelict boat once seen as nothing more than an eyesore near Bradford Beach.
The casino will cater exclusively to the centuries-old card game that has deep roots in the Milwaukee community—sheepshead. Players will get the opportunity to engage in high-stakes tournaments in a setting that combines the serenity of Lake Michigan with the thrill of a good hand, and a portion of the profits will be funneled into supporting port operations and community initiatives, thereby creating a recreational venue that doubles as a means for economic contribution.
In his statement, Alderman Burgelis underscored the casino's homage to a local pastime, saying, "By focusing solely on sheepshead, we’re honoring something that connects so many in our city," as reported by the city's official website. Meanwhile, some gambling enthusiasts and local business owners see the floating casino as a welcome addition that might spark a boost in the city's tourism and provide a novel venue for social gatherings. Additionally, there is a promise of food, drinks, and music to complement the communal spirit of the card tables, all of which aim to lure both locals and tourists to share in Milwaukee's card-playing legacy.
The project, namely "The Port of Jackpot," is currently in the planning stages, with more details expected to be shared with the public soon as the Port of Milwaukee embarks on this blend of economic initiative and tribute to Milwaukee's cultural fabric.
