Tragedy struck a Racine neighborhood Tuesday when a house fire on Blake Avenue, near Goold Street, was reported around 12:20 p.m. A Racine police officer, hailed as a hero, saved a man and two dogs from the blaze, which was documented through the lens of his body camera. According to FOX6 News, all residents have been accounted for, but the incident sadly claimed the lives of two other canine members of the household.
The dramatic rescue involved Officer Golden of the Racine Police Department. Breaking through the back door, he discovered the man unconscious on the living room floor, engulfed by the looming threat of fire. New footage released from Officer Golden's body cam, shared by TMJ4, shows him dragging the man to safety before re-entering the inferno twice to rescue two dogs.
The aftermath of the fire has left the Therkelsen family, whose home was consumed by flames, facing an arduous road ahead. According to WISN 12 News, local neighbors, including Karina Martinez, have rallied behind the family, with one saying, "It was the scariest thing ever," seeing the flames approach her home. Martinez is coordinating efforts to gather clothes and diapers for the family. A GoFundMe page has also been set up to assist with medical and housing costs for the Therkelsens, who lost "everything in the fire," as stated by family and friends.
The Racine Fire Department estimated the damage at approximately $63,000 to the structure and $17,000 to the contents inside. While the father of three is improving, his condition in the hospital remains serious. "He did survive. He's still in the hospital. He's doing better, but he's still not good," Martinez told WISN 12 News. The fire department has underscored the absence of working smoke detectors in the home, an unsettling reminder of the importance of fire safety measures. Meanwhile, investigations continue to determine the cause of the fire.
