Rosalyn Sandri, a teacher at Red Oak ISD in Texas, has resigned after receiving transphobic threats that escalated from the online world into her personal life. Sandri had previously shared a TikTok video where she expressed appreciation for her students' respectful use of her pronouns, as well as their adoption of calling her "ma'am" and "miss" and using her chosen name. The video has since attracted significant attention, according to Chron.
The video, originally a moment of affirmation and validation, gained significant attention when the account Libs of TikTok reposted it on X (formerly known as Twitter), exposing Sandri to over 5.5 million viewers. This led to a surge of harassment, with many messages containing sharp and threatening language, disrupting the professional context of her role and drawing Sandri into a highly public and challenging situation, KHOU 11 reports.
Following the backlash, Texas State Representative Brian Harrison called for Sandri's resignation, framing the issue as a matter of educational integrity versus indoctrination, contributing to the ongoing debate in the state over gender diversity and inclusion. In addition, Sandri received threatening messages, including one urging her to "eat a bullet," along with other intimidating remarks, according to KHOU 11.
Amid the growing threats and public pressure from political figures, Sandri felt it was necessary to resign for her own safety and the safety of her students, expressing concerns about the potential end of her teaching career in Texas. "I felt like I was signing away my ability to teach in the state of Texas," Sandri told WFAA. "I don't know what another school will touch me now," Chron reported. Meanwhile, Libs of TikTok and Rep. Harrison have publicly addressed Sandri's resignation, framing it according to their respective perspectives on the matter.
