On a busy Tuesday evening at a Food 4 Less parking lot in Rancho Cucamonga, a woman found herself in a violent tug-of-war for her vehicle. As reported by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, a man attempted to force his way into the driver's seat, looking to hijack the woman's car in broad daylight. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Jorge Diaz of Rialto, was unable to prevail thanks to the woman's resilience and prompt intervention by a bystander.

The victim, whose identity has been kept confidential, recounted how an assailant opened her car door at approximately 5:46 P.M. and tried to physically remove her. Not one to give up without a fight, she re-entered her vehicle and managed to not just resist, but also prevent Diaz from gaining control. A helpful witness, witnessing the scene unravel, stepped in to pull Diaz away, allowing the victim to quickly drive to a safer place within the vicinity.

Still shaken, the victim contacted Sheriff's Dispatch. While on the line with the dispatcher, she was able to flag down a deputy already patrolling nearby. A search for Diaz ensued shortly thereafter, culminating in his arrest as he walked around the business complex where the incident unfolded. "Diaz was located walking in the business complex and was taken into custody," detailed a statement released by the Sheriff's department.

Following the altercation, Diaz was booked at West Valley Detention Center. His bail was set at $45,000 for the charge of an attempted carjacking, officially denoted as PC 664/215(a). In light of this incident, the Sheriff's Department is actively seeking any additional information that may assist them further. They have appealed to the public to contact the Rancho Cucamonga Sheriff’s Station directly or to use the We-Tip Hotline anonymously.
