May is a significant month in Round Rock, known for celebrating the city's history and heritage. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has deemed it National Preservation Month since 1973, presenting a chance for various organizations to shed light on preservation efforts. Round Rock has a wide range of events lined up, from historical tours to engaging exhibits, ensuring that there's something for everybody. Details on these events and more can be found at the city's website.
An early kickoff event, the Chuckwagon Dinner, is hosted by the Williamson Museum on Friday, May 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Old Settlers Association grounds. This dinner promises to be a ticketed dive into traditional cuisine and theatrical entertainment. Followed by Pioneer Day on May 3, where families can enjoy a day filled with hands-on activities and get a glimpse of early Texas settler life, hosted at the same locale.
Further into the month, the Round Rock City Council will commence its first meeting in May with a proclamation in City Council Chambers, officially recognizing Preservation Month. Likewise, a highlight for the community will be the Black History Tour of Round Rock, organized by the Round Rock Black History Organization, that will take participants on a virtual journey through the city's Black heritage.
A distinctive offering for history buffs, the Lunch and Learn session on May 13 focuses on the Old Settlers Association. It will be held at the Allen R. Baca Center, and attendees are invited to bring their lunch. They can delve into history and understand the association's continued impact on preserving Round Rock's historical fabric. Following this, on May 15, an Exhibit Reception named 'Celebrate Round Rock' will feature local artists who have captured the essence of their community. The event will also take place at the Baca Center.
Volunteering takes center stage on May 17, with the Round Rock Cemetery Cleanup. The Round Rock Cemetery Association welcomes participants to help maintain one of the city's historic sites. Supplies are provided, ensuring all volunteers can contribute effectively.
For those interested in art and culture, the 'Celebrate Round Rock Art Exhibit', presented by the Center Art Club, will be displayed throughout the month at the Baca Center. Alternatively, the 'Bygone Elegance: Antique Handkerchief Exhibit' at the Round Rock Public Library’s third floor shares a window into the past through delicate fabrics and designs.
