An officer-involved shooting occurred in the neighborhood of Orangevale, Sacramento County, last Saturday evening, leaving 67-year-old Kenneth Vaughn dead after a standoff with local law enforcement. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detailed the event in a social media post, stating that the incident began when deputies were called to the 8600 block of Blythe Avenue in response to a resident firing a gun illegally in a densely-populated zone.

The incident escalated quickly after deputies failed to make contact with Vaughn via telephone. Despite their efforts to evacuate residents from neighboring homes, some chose to remain and shelter in place. The deputies then prepared to confront the suspect, positioning armored vehicles in front of Vaughn's residence. In a tense turn of events, Vaughn, who claimed to have mobility issues, opened his front door, only to shut his security door again, cutting off visual access for the deputies and their drone.

As time progressed, Vaughn's cooperation deteriorated; he eventually closed all of his curtains and blinds and became unresponsive to deputies' attempts at communication. This led to the involvement of the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT Team) and the Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT), who also struggled to negotiate a peaceful surrender. Despite hours of conversation and PA announcements, Vaughn made "repeated threats to shoot Deputies," as detailed in the Sheriff's Office post.

The standoff came to a head at around 9:50 PM, when Vaughn reportedly fired a shot towards SED deputies. In response, a deputy returned fire, striking Vaughn in the torso. Medical aid was promptly administered upon entry to the residence, but tragically, Vaughn was pronounced dead at the scene by Fire Department personnel. The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division are currently investigating the shooting, with an independent review by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office to follow, in line with standard practice for officer-involved shootings.
