Southgate community members gathered Sunday night in a show of solidarity and remembrance for Amber Benedict, whose life was tragically cut short by a house explosion on April 3. As reported by CBS News Detroit, the candlelight vigil was held outdoors, where several hundred attendees paid their respects and shared hopeful messages for the recovery of Amber's husband, Paul Benedict, who is presently hospitalized with critical injuries.
The vigil came as the couple's 10th anniversary loomed on the horizon, a milestone they will now never celebrate together. Paul Benedict is currently remaining in the hospital fighting for recovery after the explosion that took his wife's life; his battle was marked by an outpouring of support, including FaceTime calls with friends and family during the vigil, according to ClickOnDetroit. The Benedicts' loss extended beyond personal injury, as their home's destruction also resulted in the confirmed death of one of their cats, with another cat and their dog still unaccounted for, adding a further layer of heartbreak to the already heavy toll.
Amber's mother, Leane Herndon, reminisced about her daughter's ever-present smile and dedication to her cookie business, describing her as having a passion for being the "best aunt in the world," a sentiment echoed by Amber's sister Tiffany, who stated, "Just seeing how many people loved her -- It just shows what an amazing person she was" in a statement detailed by CBS News Detroit. The blast not only ravaged the Benedicts' home but also affected nearby structures, including the residence of neighbors Bob and Kathy Wood.
