The City of St. Petersburg is offering a helping hand to local artists through its Individual Artist Grant Program, pouring $200,000 into the creative coffers of the community. As part of this initiative, 40 St. Pete artists, spanning a multitude of disciplines from music to dance to literary arts, can each snag a $5,000 grant to bolster their artistic endeavors. "I am thrilled to announce the launch of St. Pete’s new Individual Artist Grants," said Celeste Davis, Director of Arts, Culture, and Tourism for the City of St. Petersburg, in a statement. Davis highlighted the grants as a way to not only support artists financially but also to reinforce the City’s dedication to nurturing creative talents and fostering the growth of arts businesses.

To qualify for these funds, artists must check off a few boxes, they must be professionals crafting a livelihood from their art, they must be at least 18 years old, and they need to be living or working in St. Pete with plans to continue doing so post-grant. These grants are not just free cash but a means for real operational support, intended to underwrite an artist's general expenses for the fiscal year. Applicants are welcome to attend two public grant review sessions scheduled for June 18 and July 7, as noted from 10 a.m. to noon.

Shifting to the timeline, the grant period will stretch from June 1 to September 30. Within this window, artists must put their grant dollars to use, whether it's snatching up supplies, covering studio rents, or whatever else falls under the umbrella of "general allowable expenses."

Interested local creatives have a chance to see how the selection process unfolds in real-time, with the city inviting them and the general public to observe the review and scoring of applications; this grants not only an opportunity to receive funding but a transparent look into how such decisions are made within the community. The public review sessions are an effort to ensure that the dissemination of these funds is as transparent as it is beneficial.
