As Northern Michigan begins recovering from the ice storm that caused widespread damage in March, state and federal teams are conducting damage assessments. The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) has partnered with FEMA and local officials to assess the impact of the storm, which will help determine the need for federal aid.
According to the Michigan State Police Newsroom, Governor Whitmer stated that recovery efforts will continue as communities rebuild. The assessment process is split into two phases: starting yesterday through Friday, teams will focus on homes and businesses, while from next week's Monday to Friday, they will assess public infrastructure and response costs.
Teams will visit several counties, including Alcona, Alpena, and Antrim, to identify severely affected properties. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is also evaluating damages and may offer low-interest disaster loans to those impacted. Not all properties will be visited, as teams will focus on areas most affected. Residents and business owners are encouraged to report damage through the self-reporting tool on Michigan's website.
