The tragic hit-and-run incident that took the life of 22-year-old skateboarder Oscar Lopez in the Koreatown neighborhood has led to the arrest of suspect Fedir Latsenko, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The collision occurred early morning on Thursday near the intersection of Mariposa Avenue and Sixth Street.
As Latsenko was maneuvering his 2017 Ford Transit van, he collided with Lopez, who was also westbound, but on a skateboard. The impact was so forceful that it sent Lopez hurling onto the sidewalk—resulting in fatal injuries, as reported by CBS News Los Angeles. Following the crash, Latsenko fled the scene, prompting an investigation that eventually led to his vehicle's discovery and his arrest over the subsequent weekend.
LAPD's West Traffic Detectives worked the case and, upon finding the involved vehicle, arrested 20-year-old Latsenko with booking number 6992240. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has since filed one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. In the tragic aftermath of such events, the LAPD has reminded motorists to adhere to the legal requirement of stopping to render aid and identifying themselves after a traffic collision.
Additional information about the circumstances leading to Latsenko's arrest was not immediately visible, and the public plea for information continues; anyone witnessing the crash or having details is urged to reach out. Latsenko's arraignment for the charge was scheduled.
