Officials have reported that Roscoe Jerome Jones, a 31-year-old man from Oxon Hill, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department and the Annapolis Police Department yesterday morning. Jones is the primary suspect in a March 19 double shooting near an Annapolis school bus stop, which tragically resulted in the death of 36-year-old John Simms Jr. and left an 11-year-old child with a gunshot wound to the foot, as stated in the report from FOX Baltimore.
The incident unfolded in a busy residential neighborhood, triggering a swift response from law enforcement. "The apprehension of Roscoe Jones is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of our law enforcement partners," Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson remarked in a statement detailed by WBALTV.
An argument that escalated into a deadly confrontation preceded the shooting. Investigators detailed how an altercation between Jones and Simms evolved into an outbreak of mace and chaos before a gun was drawn and shots rang out, as Chief Jackson revealed in a community meeting. The aftermath has been a heavy one, as Shatoya Larkins, speaking to the pain of a child now left fatherless, implored the man responsible for her partner's death to surrender, as she told CBS News Baltimore, "Now my daughter don't have a father, the only man she will ever know."
While Jones awaits extradition, Annapolis police have assured the public of their ongoing dedication to community safety. The police department continues to welcome tips related to the investigation, with Detective Courtney Moore and Detective J. Liebross being the primary contact points for those with information. Anonymous tipsters have various channels available for submission, including the U.S. Marshals tip line and Metro Crime Stoppers.
