A suspect led police on a high-speed chase from the Inland Empire to Southern California, resulting in a dramatic arrest after crashing into a police cruiser. The chase began near Chino and extended across county lines, as the California Highway Patrol (CHP) took over the pursuit on the freeway late Monday night, according to FOX LA.
The driver, reported to possibly be under the influence and accused of assaulting an officer, maneuvered a dark-colored Lexus SUV through the westbound lanes of CA-60, transitioning onto the southbound 710 Freeway, and crashing into a Chino police cruiser before fleeing, KTLA detailed. The CHP executed two precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuvers, which eventually brought the pursuit to a halt at the intersection of Atlantic and Rosecrans avenues in Rancho Dominguez.
Following the successful PIT maneuver, a standoff occurred where officers used a crowbar to break the suspect's vehicle window, as he refused to exit; the confrontation ended with the suspect being forcibly removed and taken into custody, reported CBS News Los Angeles. The scene unfolded with CHP surrounding the vehicle with guns drawn before resorting to the window-smashing tactic to retrieve the driver.
The involvement of the Chino Police Department and CHP illustrates interagency cooperation in response to a situation that spanned two counties, while details of where the initial crash occurred between the suspect and the police cruiser remained unspecified, according to further coverage by ABC7, the law enforcement effort concluded with the apprehension of an individual now likely facing assault with a deadly weapon among other charges.
