Feeding Tampa Bay's reliance on programs like the now-cut Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement (LFPA) highlights the critical role that federal funds play in enabling food banks to procure goods from local farmers for community distribution. As the USDA scales back such programs, local organizations find themselves scrambling to bridge the gap. In an interview by WFLA News, an official with Feeding Tampa Bay stated, "We want this population, we need this population to be resilient so the rest of the population can have safety in our food system, and that’s not what we’re doing at all."
Despite the federal cuts, some support may emerge from state legislation. The Florida Senate has proposed a budget with $50 million earmarked for food bank grants. This includes $12 million slated for the expansion of food banks in rural areas and another $38 million to facilitate the purchase of food products from Florida farmers. However, the discrepancy between the Florida Senate and House Agriculture proposals leaves uncertainty surrounding future funding. The latter has not incorporated either of these grant programs in its budget outline.
