Tampa's North Downtown area is set for a shake-up with a redevelopment plan to bring new life to the underutilized space between N Tampa Street and E Ashley Drive. A recent announcement detailed a Request for Proposal (RFP) aiming to transform four city and agency-owned acres into a mixed-use neighborhood. The plan includes a call for at least 750 housing units, half of which are to be affordable. Residents can expect to see an increase in connectivity with proposed changes to the I-275 on-ramp, designed to improve both pedestrian safety and access throughout Downtown Tampa. The City of Tampa has set a June 13 deadline for proposals, post which city officials will vet and select a finalist.

Tampa's Mayor Jane Castor has highlighted the focus on teamwork in urban development. "This long-term planning and teamwork involving state and local partners are the special ingredients that build strong and thriving cities," Castor said in a statement obtained by City of Tampa's official government news. Her vision is to not just rapidly begin the process of building affordable housing but also to complement ongoing projects designed to make the downtown area more walkable and accessible. Additionally, there are plans to possibly extend the streetcar up to Palm Avenue, offering another transit layer to the area's connectivity canvas.

Beyond just housing, the proposed redevelopment directly neighbors the Ashley Drive on-ramp to I-275, and a redesign here could greatly alter how locals and visitors move around Tampa. The proposed changes are part of a broader commitment to link the growing number of riverfront amenities, like the Riverwalk and nearby entertainment venues including the Straz Center and Tampa Museum of Art.

The North Downtown project is just one component of a larger strategy known as Transforming Tampa's Tomorrow. This initiative connects multiple redevelopment efforts like the Gasworx in Ybor City, Rome Yard in West Tampa, and Encore, all aimed to invigorate the urban core. "We are excited to begin the process of adding much-needed affordable housing to this great location in our urban core and cannot wait for the other redevelopment projects in this area that will make it more walkable and accessible for all those living, working, and visiting Tampa's beautiful downtown," Castor told the City of Tampa's governmental news outlet, underscoring the interconnected nature of these urban revitalization efforts.
