During a routine traffic stop in Twentynine Palms last week, local authorities arrested a 66-year-old man, identified as Gordon Farmer, for allegedly being under the influence of methamphetamine while unlawfully carrying a firearm. San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department detailed the incident that occurred on Wednesday at the intersection of Adobe Road and Desert Dunes Drive.
Deputies from the Morongo Basin Station were performing proactive patrols when they decided to stop Farmer's vehicle over a traffic code violation. During the stop, they found a firearm not registered to Farmer in the vehicle. The Sheriff's Department reported that Farmer also appeared to have ingested methamphetamine before being stopped. He was subsequently placed under arrest under Health and Safety Code 11550(e), indicating his combined influence of controlled substances and possession of a firearm – a precarious situation the law looks upon with grave severity.
The case against Farmer escalated the following day when deputies executed a search warrant at his residence. Suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia were found, possibly amplifying the charges that Farmer may be facing. The Sheriff-Coroner's press release invited anyone with more information to come forward and assist in the case.
The search at Farmer's home suggests that this traffic stop might have uncovered only the tip of an iceberg. It underscores ongoing concerns about the intersection of drug use and gun possession in the region – a lethal combination that law enforcement actively seeks to curtail.
