Two teenagers are facing serious charges after allegedly hijacking a DoorDash driver's vehicle in Southfield, a city located just outside of Detroit. As reported by CBS News Detroit, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office has charged both suspects, aged 17 and 18, with carjacking and carrying a concealed weapon following the incident involving the theft of a 2023 Dodge Charger.
The older suspect, identified as Derek Butler by WXYZ, and his younger accomplice, whose name has not been disclosed due to his juvenile status, made their move while the DoorDash employee was in the process of making a delivery; it is reported that the victim was threatened with a firearm during the confrontation. After the theft, the duo led police on a high-speed chase, at times surging past 100 mph, before they were apprehended and a gun was discovered in their possession, stashed in the vehicle's center console, as they tried to escape, the scene was a dramatic one.
In a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald emphasized the severity and impact of carjackings: "Carjackings are more than just a property crime; they traumatize victims and endanger our communities." This point reflects the broader concerns of violent crimes impacting those simply going about their working day, underscored by another recent and tragic case in Ferndale where a 26-year-old DoorDash driver was fatally shot last month in what appeared to be a road rage incident; a 39-year-old man has since been charged in connection with that case.
If the court finds the accused guilty, they could spend several years in prison. WOOD TV shared more details showing how dangerous the situation was—not just for the victim, but for the whole community.
