In a decisive move to tackle a significant infrastructure crisis, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has executed a grant agreement for $221 million, putting federal funds in motion to rebuild Rhode Island's deteriorating Washington Bridge; this comes after a concerning discovery of the bridge's critical failure during its reconstruction in December 2023, the U.S. Transportation Department announced. The grant was previously announced but not signed by the prior administration, leaving the project in limbo and highlighting a larger issue of roughly 3,200 unobligated grants left by the former government officials.
Secretary Duffy has been outspoken about his findings upon taking office, emphasizing an inherited backlog that stalled many such vital projects, "This backlog, along with ridiculous DEI and Green New Deal requirements, prevented real infrastructure from being built and funded," he said in a statement; detailing the efforts to cut through what he deems bureaucratic red tape the Trump Administration has demonstrated an accelerating pace in releasing funds for infrastructure, such as the critically needed Washington Bridge, which not only serves Rhode Island commuters but is also a key transportation artery connecting the region to southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod, as per the U.S. Transportation Department.
Rhode Island's own minority leaders have expressed their gratitude for the federal attention and the expedience with which the administration has acted. "Thank you to Secretary Duffy and USDOT for being so responsive to our recent communications with the Administration about the Washington Bridge. Delivering a meaningful solution for the people of Rhode Island on the most serious infrastructure failure our state has experienced is paramount to our work," Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz and House Minority Leader Mike Chippendale jointly commented, reflecting a bipartisan desire for addressing the state's infrastructure woes, as detailed by the U.S. Transportation Department.
The Washington Bridge, a key component of the I-195 corridor, has faced concerning structural issues, including severed tie rods, failing post-tensioned concrete girders and general concrete degradation leading to the closure of its westbound passage which was originally constructed in 1969 it has since become evident that a complete replacement of the span is necessary for the safety and continuity of daily transportation in the region, according to the statement made by the Department of Transportation. With Secretary Duffy at the helm, the Transportation Department is pushing forward with releasing backlogged funds, aiming to provide practical solutions and fulfilling commitments made to the American public, while increasing accountability when it comes to federal spending on such infrastructural endeavors.
