
The recent UMBC Poll has shed light on the sentiments of Baltimore City and County residents regarding their quality of life and trust in local government. The survey, which gathered responses from over 1,200 individuals, indicates a prevalent distrust in local authorities: "65% of Baltimore City residents said they can trust their local government 'never' or 'only some of the time,' with Baltimore County residents coming it at 60% for their level of trust," as reported by FOX Baltimore.
Residents have articulated that reducing taxes and improving public safety should be prioritized to enhance living conditions. Specifically, "21% say reduce taxes, cost of living" in Baltimore City, while in Baltimore County, "25% say reduce taxes, cost of living," as per the same source. The survey also highlighted the significant impact caused by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over a year ago, with "79%" in the city and "89%" in the county saying it has affected their lives considerably.
Complementing these insights, WBAL-TV shared details on the populace's satisfaction with government services. In the county, majority approval was seen for trash and recycling pickup, though satisfaction with policing and public safety services varied: "Only 57% of poll takers were satisfied or very satisfied" with these services. The story in the city is less than ideal; trash and recycling services drew a satisfaction rate of "only 68%" and "69%" respectively.
In terms of addressing rising utility costs, Baltimore residents are feeling the heat, with "82% of Baltimore City residents and 79% of Baltimore County residents" acknowledging energy bills as a pressing concern, according to information from CBS News Baltimore. Maryland lawmakers have attempted to introduce legislation to temper these costs, but to no avail, as no bills have successfully passed yet. On the public safety front, the survey suggests a discrepancy between perceived crime levels and actual crime statistics. While "83% of Baltimore City residents" see crime as a major concern, the city has experienced a drop in violent crimes over the past year.
