Alijah Arenas, the USC basketball recruit and son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, is reportedly on the mend and preparing to leave the hospital after a serious car accident in Los Angeles. According to CBS News Los Angeles, Arenas was involved in a collision that left his Tesla Cybertruck in flames after hitting a fire hydrant and a tree. It was later taken to a tow yard where the fire occurred.
Despite the crash and resulting fire, Alijah did not sustain major injuries and, after a stint in a medically induced coma to treat smoke inhalation, he is now walking and talking, emerging with a positive prognosis Josiah Johnson, co-host of Gilbert Arenas' podcast "Gil's Arena," said in the show that Alijah "should be released from the hospital very soon," and considering that he is making considerable progress, it seems he may soon return to his promising basketball career which could be a big boost for the Trojans this fall considering his status as a blue-chip recruit.
There has been an outpouring of support from the community and public figures alike, with USC Coach Eric Musselman tweeting his thoughts and prayers, according to KTLA. Meanwhile, Arenas' mother, Laura Govan, requested prayers via Instagram, and Underdog Fantasy Sports, a partner of Gilbert Arenas' podcast, extended heartfelt words during this "difficult moment" for the family.
Further details regarding the cause of the accident have not been revealed, yet AP News reported that the younger Arenas had been returning from the gym at the time of the crash. The LAPD has yet to determine what prompted the incident.
