A Wake County man is facing felony charges for insurance fraud, according to an announcement from North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey. Justin Kevin Baba Alexander, 31, purportedly submitted falsified documents to Westfield Insurance Co., claiming he had lost wages totaling $1,630.75.
Arrested in Cumberland County on Tuesday, Alexander is now waiting for a bond hearing and is scheduled to appear in the Wake County District Court tomorrow. Caught in the tangled net of the law, these charges root back to an incident that occurred on Oct. 27, 2024, as per the arrest documents.
The North Carolina Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, involved in Alexander's case, is urging the public to report any suspicions of insurance fraud or similar white-collar crimes. The impact of such fraud is considerable, with Commissioner Causey stating that "approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud."
Mike Causey’s office is taking a strong stance against insurance fraud, declaring, "I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina," the consequences of which directly hit consumers' wallets.
