It's National Community Development Week, and while most of us are navigating the hustle of city living, it’s worth turning attention to the local programs that hold up the framework of our neighborhoods. Among them, the Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG) stands out as a pivotal player in promoting urban renewal and bolstering services that aid low and moderate-income individuals.
Since being taken under the wing by the City of West Allis in 1994, the CDBG has funneled crucial funding into various community lifelines. According to a recent report, program administration, including fair housing, commanded $258,335 in expenses, while public service initiatives raised $156,398, aiding 754 households last year alone. Housing improvements have been steady over the past three years, with over $239,870 invested in rehabilitation loans.
Economic development is another cornerstone of the CDBG’s work. Last fiscal year, they rolled out $193,044 in financial assistance, yielding a sixfold return on every dollar loaned as interest. Public facilities haven’t been overlooked either, with $173,903 injected into enhancing community spaces. All these efforts, however, may hit a roadblock with looming budget cuts.
There's a chill of concern in the air as federal directives signal a hefty slash in the program's funding for 2025. West Allis could see its annual entitlement, typically averaging $1.2 million, shrink by half. The City is sounding the alarm, urging residents to reach out to officials who could champion the necessity of CDBG and fight for its financial sustenance. Details surrounding the call to action were outlined in their recent announcement.
If there's ever a time to grasp the adage that every voice counts, it's now, with community services teetering on the edge of a fiscal cliff. So, as National Community Development Week unfolds, perhaps the most constructive celebration would be to heed West Allis's plea and make that call or send that email. The future livability of many a neighborhood might well depend on it.
