Last night in West Sacramento, chaos unfolded on the 600 block of Water Street as police responded to a situation that was both heartbreaking and violent. According to a social media post by the West Sacramento Police Department, officers responded around 10:20 pm to reports of a man lying in the street and yelling. The individual in question turned out to be a West Sacramento resident who was in a state of intoxication near his family's home.
As the officers attempted to provide assistance, they escorted the man towards his residence, and the situation took a sudden turn; the front gate was opened by the subject and a large German Shepherd bolted out - the events that followed led to an altercation in which the dog, after initially aiming for an officer’s leg but only catching his pants, then bit the officer's wrist and hand prompting the officer to discharge his weapon at the animal. Subsequently, the bitten officer was taken to a hospital to receive medical attention, and despite efforts to address the injuries, the dog did not survive.
This violent episode has prompted an internal review by the department's professional standards unit as standard practice in such incidents involving the discharge of a firearm by police personnel, emphasizing the gravity and seriousness with which they handle cases of force. The West Sacramento Police Department has publicly offered their condolences to the dog's owner through their post, stating "We extend our deepest condolences to the dog owner for their loss and also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured officer."
