David Siegel, the founder and executive chairman of Westgate Resorts, died at 89. Renowned for his entrepreneurial spirit and heart for philanthropy, Siegel left behind a legacy that extends beyond his timeshare empire and into the realm of social activism, particularly in combatting the opioid crisis. WFTV reported on Siegel's death, with tributes highlighting his journey from launching Westgate Resorts in his garage to creating a timeshare behemoth.
After the tragic loss of his daughter Victoria to an accidental drug overdose in 2015, Siegel became a staunch advocate for drug education and opioid addiction prevention. Alongside his wife Jackie, he founded the Victoria’s Voice Foundation in 2019, which aimed to reduce drug experimentation, addiction, and overdose death drastically. According to ClickOrlando, in a 2024 interview, his son, David Siegel Jr., said, "She’d be very proud of the work our parents have done and the work we’ve done spreading the awareness because every single life matters." In the face of such unspeakable family tragedy, the Siegels endeavored to forge a beacon of hope to "save as many lives as possible."
Westgate Resorts announced Siegel's passing this morning and issued a statement reflecting on his unwavering dedication to both his company and the fight against the scourge of drug addiction. As per ClickOrlando, the Westgate Resorts email stated, "Throughout his life, as well as in his last years, David’s passion for our company, our industry and the hospitality we create was always at the forefront of his mind."
Instead of flowers, Siegel's family asks for donations to Victoria's Voice to help fight a national crisis they’ve worked hard to address. Siegel is survived by his wife Jacqueline, 13 children, 12 grandchildren and step-grandchildren. He made a lasting impact on both the industries he helped shape and the communities he worked to protect.
