The National Weather Service in Las Vegas warns of gusty winds this week in San Bernardino County, with multiple Wind Advisories in effect. Meanwhile, temperatures are taking a dip, running 8 to 12 degrees cooler than yesterday and expected to fall even further midweek. According to the National Weather Service Las Vegas Area Forecast Discussion, the region might also see "isolated showers (and possibly even a rumble of thunder)" in the eastern portions Wednesday and Thursday.
The culprit behind this weather shift is an upper-level trough digging south, which will bluntly cool temperatures by an additional 2 to 7 degrees by tomorrow. According to the National Weather Service, "Winds across southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and east-central California have begun to decrease," but don't start celebrating just yet. This respite is only for those specific areas as other regions can expect to continue facing gusts. Looking ahead to Wednesday and Thursday, the forecast highlights that "isolated showers/virga" are on the table, which means that even if precipitation is limited, don't be caught off guard if you run into sporadic rain - or the odd thunderclap.
The NWS discussion also warns that "The primary hazards with any showers that develop will be light precipitation, variable breezy winds, and lightning." So, for those living in the higher terrains of Lincoln, Clark, and Mohave Counties, you've got a 30 to 60 percent shot at some rainfall tomorrow. Not to be left out, the Mojave Preserve and eastern San Bernardino County are also playing the precipitation lottery with a 20 to 30 percent chance of getting wet. If you're at higher elevations, keep an eye out for minor snow accumulations with snow levels around 4,500 to 5,000 feet on Wednesday.
Las Vegas will see stronger northerly winds on Friday and Saturday, with gusts up to 40 mph due to tight pressure gradients. The weekend and early next week will bring clear skies and temperatures returning to or slightly above normal. For travelers and aviation enthusiasts, Harry Reid's 12Z Forecast warns of shifting winds and possible showers starting early Wednesday. These could bring ceilings below 8,000 feet, affecting flights. Expect air traffic disruptions over the southern Great Basin, spreading to Lincoln, Clark, and Mohave counties from tonight through Wednesday. Stay updated on weather conditions this week for smoother travels.
