The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking public feedback on a proposed change to the Southern Region Planning Group Master Plan. The proposal would convert existing department access roads and maintenance trails into designated nonmotorized public trails in the Vernon Wildlife Area and Bloomfield State Habitat Area, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources plans to officially designate trails across 20,000 acres in seven southeast Wisconsin counties, ensuring routine maintenance and inspections for better public access and a more consistent recreational experience. This includes the 4,000-acre Vernon Wildlife Area and the 1,200-acre Bloomfield State Habitat Area, which support activities like hunting, fishing, and trapping within diverse ecosystems of wetlands, grasslands, and hardwood forests. Governed by Chapter NR 44 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code, this move aligns with existing land management objectives, balancing accessibility with conservation efforts.
Vernon Wildlife Area and Bloomfield State Habitat Area offer diverse landscapes, from Lake Ivanhoe’s shores to various natural habitats. While the existing infrastructure provides a foundation, community input and upgrades could improve trails and public access.
