Yesterday, a 25-year-old woman was the victim of an unprovoked stabbing, reportedly with a piece of broken glass. According to Gothamist, the NYPD responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress at around 3:04 p.m. at 480 Broome Street. Upon arrival, they discovered the woman with a serious stab wound to her neck. She was quickly transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where she is fighting for her life in critical condition. The police have taken a person of interest into custody, and witnesses have pointed to a glass bottle as the weapon used in this heinous act.

The stabbings appear to have been random acts of violence. The suspect is said to have first attacked a 29-year-old woman by breaking a bottle on her back before turning on the younger victim with a shard of glass. Several Good Samaritans rushed to aid the injured woman, and the police were able to apprehend the suspect about five blocks from the scene. According to an interview by ABC7 New York, a witness remarked, "Everybody was taking good care of her."

The NYPD Commanding Officer James McCarthy, in a statement to ABC7 New York, shared, "We're praying that she comes out of surgery and that she's going to make a quick recovery." The attack not only led to a medical emergency but also impacted local businesses as crime scene tape blocked off the area, prompting some stores to close early and leaving passersby in a state of dismay. "Hopefully this girl is fine and gets through it. It's sad," said one individual affected by the day's harrowing events.

The authorities are currently striving to fully ascertain the identity of the suspect in custody, a man estimated to be in his 40s who provided a false name upon arrest. He appears to have been struggling with mental illness, ABC7 New York reports. The investigation continues.
