19-year-old Javarry Peaks, a resident of the District, entered a guilty plea for the assault of an individual on a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus, as per the information disclosed by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Metro Transit Police Department Chief Michael Anzallo. This violent interaction took place on a seemingly ordinary route within the city's bustling transit system and has brought a surge of concern and attention to public transportation safety.
The incident on March 8 began to unfold at the Anacostia Metro Station around 9:30 p.m. As the bus proceeded on the V2 route, Peaks and the unspecified victim commenced a verbal exchange that escalated to physical confrontation. While Peaks attempted to exit the bus and the victim momentarily blocked him, their interaction continued, resulting in Peaks finally shooting the victim in the chest after re-boarding the vehicle, reported the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Peaks, facing charges of aggravated assault while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, could serve a minimum of five years in prison as part of his mandatory sentence. The guilty plea was submitted in the Superior Court on May 2nd, with the sentencing set for July 3 before the Honorable Rainey Brandt.
The Metro Transit Police Department led the investigation into the event, culminating in the arrest of Peaks on March 25. He has remained in custody, awaiting the resolution that July's sentencing is poised to bring. As described by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Goldstein, who is prosecuting the case, the evidence is clear: at 9:45 p.m., after re-entering the bus, Peaks shot the victim near the bus operator's station following an interaction that had escalated from verbal to physical, with the bus operator innocently opening the doors just as Peaks fired the shot.
This case is a part of the broader 'Make DC Safe and Beautiful Again' initiative, a campaign previously associated with President Donald J. Trump, aiming to address public safety concerns within the district.
