Residents and drivers in Anne Arundel County should prepare to ease up on the gas pedal in several school zones. Starting May 19, the county plans to activate two additional speed-enforcement cameras. According to WMAR-2 News, these cameras are positioned near High Point Elementary School on Duval Highway in Pasadena and Hebron-Harmon Elementary School on Ridge Chapel Road in Hanover.

The initiative aims to enhance safety for students by discouraging speeding in sensitive areas. As reported by WBAL-TV, these cameras will be operational weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Violators can expect to be handed a $40 citation for traveling 12 mph or more over the posted limit after a 15-day warning window. Officials hope to deter would-be speeders with these cameras effectively, the latest set to be activated in the county following the April installation of devices in additional school zones.

Introducing these cameras is part of a larger campaign to ensure children's safety as they travel to and from school. The county's recent emphasis on traffic compliance is seen as a critical measure in addressing a problem that's all too common in residential and school areas. Both locations will initially undergo a period of warnings instead of fines to acclimate the public to the new measures.

Earlier in April, Anne Arundel County had already taken measures to curb excessive speed around educational institutions slowly. Cameras were set up at Belle Grove Elementary School, Linthicum Elementary School, School of the Incarnation, Van Bokkelen Elementary School, Benfield Elementary School, and Marley Middle School, as WBAL-TV reported. These steps mark a commitment by local authorities to take action on the pressing concern of traffic safety in school areas. This issue remains a priority on the county's agenda.
