As summer temperatures surge in Arlington, the city's homeless population faces new challenges in seeking relief from the relentless heat. Recognizing this critical need, the Arlington Life Shelter and The Salvation Army are stepping up as cooling stations. According to a recent report by the Office of Communication, these facilities are essential resources for those in need, allowing access to air-conditioned spaces and hydration during the most sweltering hours of the day.
Local Arlington Public Libraries have also joined the efforts to provide a respite from the heat. The libraries, including the central George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, are open to individuals seeking shelter during normal operating hours. The Office of Communication in Arlington notes that amenities like seating and water fountains are available at all library locations. The Downtown Library's hours are as follows: Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., offering a cool escape for most of the week.
Other library branches have adopted slightly varied schedules but remain equally committed to serving as cooling havens. As listed on the City of Arlington's website, these branches open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, shift to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and on Sunday, only the East Library and Recreation Center are open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Each branch, geographically spread throughout Arlington, is strategically positioned to offer refuge from the heat.
For those without a permanent residence, the Salvation Army facility at 712 W. Abram St. offers its cooling station services Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m., as stated by the Office of Communication. Up to three guests at a time can seek solace indoors for 30-minute increments.
Resources also extend to four-legged companions; Arlington Animal Services Shelter accommodates pets of homeless individuals when space permits. Situated at 1000 SE Green Oaks Blvd., the shelter can be reached at 817-459-5898 for further details. To stay informed on shelter options during extreme weather, the city invites residents to text ARLCOLD to 877-799-4950, signing up for inclement weather shelter text alerts.
