The arraignment for Mario Edgardo Garcia-Aquino, the youth soccer coach accused of the murder of 13-year-old Oscar "Omar" Hernandez, has been pushed back to June 18, leaving a family in anguish as they await justice for their slain son. Garcia-Aquino, 43, faces charges not only for Hernandez's death but also for separate allegations of sexual assault against minors, while officials grapple with a backlog of cases in the legal system. Hernandez's remains were located in Oxnard on April 2, approximately five days following the alleged killing by Garcia-Aquino, as stated in previous reports by FOX 11.
Emotions ran high as Gladys Hernandez, the victim’s mother, attended the rescheduling of the court date in downtown Los Angeles. "My son will never come back,” she was quoted as saying in NBC Los Angeles, adding that despite her irreversible loss, she covets swift justice. Alongside the murder charge, Garcia-Aquino is also charged with previously unrelated sexual assaults dating back to 2022 and 2024, lewd conduct, and assault that reflect a history of allegations poised against him, the scope of his actions demonstrating a chilling disregard for the innocence of youth.
The delay of Garcia-Aquino's plea has refocused attention on the grave issue of case backlogs in Los Angeles County's legal filing system. An issue that the office of LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has vowed to address, claiming to have decreased the backlog from nearly 10,000 cases to about 8,000 in the last five months, as conveyed in a statement that CBS News Los Angeles obtained from Hochman's office
Additional charges for Garcia-Aquino, according to the District Attorney's Office, include felony counts of assault with intent to commit a sexual offense and lewd acts upon a 14- or 15-year-old child stemming from incidents in Sylmar, and this was among the details disclosed in a CBS News Los Angeles report. Amid the legal proceedings, Garcia-Aquino potentially faces life imprisonment without parole or even death, as noted in the FOX 11 report.
