A suspected robbery in Jefferson Park escalated into an officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident occurred near Winchell's Donut House on South Western Avenue, following a report of an armed robbery. Per FOX LA, officers responded to the scene and found the suspect attempting to change clothes before he tried to flee the area.
The LAPD was quick to confirm that although an officer discharged their weapon, the suspect was not hit by gunfire. The situation instead was resolved when officers used a Taser to subdue and eventually take the individual into custody. The chaotic scene prompted an immediate medical response, with the suspect being transported to a local hospital to treat unspecified injuries, as stated by ABC7. A firearm was also later recovered at the location by law enforcement.
Details surrounding the robbery quickly unraveled as Gavino Garcia, a Winchell's employee, recounted to KCAL News, that a man had stormed into the store demanding money and assaulted a female worker with the butt of a handgun. She was reportedly left conscious and breathing following the attack. The suspect's condition after his arrest remains undisclosed.
An air unit, which has been deployed to overlook the scene, played a crucial role in tracking the suspect's movements, enabling police to quickly respond. An official update was provided by the LAPD, through their X account, communicating that the suspect had been attempting to make the most of an opportunity to change his appearance during this pursuit. The full statement is available via the LAPD's PIO X feed, found at LAPD News.
