This heightened vigilance on Austin's roadways aims to inform motorists and passengers about the critical importance of strapping in. Officers will be proactively scouting for any violations during this period.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as reported by the APD on their website, the "Click It or Ticket" initiative has significantly improved road safety over the past 22 years. They estimate that the campaign has managed to save more than 7,800 lives, prevent 139,000 serious injuries, and effectively save Texas upwards of $40 billion in related economic costs. Increasing the number of officers during the enforcement period is clearly intended to further enhance these outcomes.
Historically, seat belts have been proven to reduce the risk of fatality for front-seat passengers in cars by 45%, and for pickup truck riders by 60%. "Your seat belt is designed to keep you from being thrown into the dashboard or windshield—or even onto the road," explains the Austin Police Department. There exists a common belief that airbags alone can ensure safety. However, in the event of a crash, they function optimally only when utilized in tandem with seat belts. Without the restraint of a belt, an inflating airbag poses a greater risk than a protective measure.
Those found in violation of this Texas law can expect to face fines and court costs that can possibly reach $200. Stringent rules are in place for children as well, with those under eight required to be in a child safety seat or booster, unless height exempts them. If these young passengers are not secured appropriately, drivers could face fines up to $250, plus court costs. The APD's message is clear: "Buckle up every rider every time." They stress the importance of seat belt safety, day and night, to end the streak of lives lost due to preventable circumstances.
