In a concerted move to curb the menace of impaired driving, the Austin Police Department fortified its presence in Downtown Austin with targeted operations on Friday and Saturday nights. Officials, equipped with Drug Recognition Expertise, focused their efforts on detecting and deterring individuals driving under the influence of intoxicants. The intensified enforcement led to a series of apprehensions and warnings issued to errant drivers, according to a recent statement from APD.
During the period of increased patrol, APD officers made 13 arrests for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), tested 21 drivers for impairment who ultimately were not arrested, handed out 51 warnings, and issued 12 citations for traffic violations tied to impaired driving. The action, which unfolded over the course of three weeks, specifically trained its lens on Friday and Saturday nights – periods associated with a surge in drunken revelries and the subsequent risk that spills onto the streets.
Conveying a sobering reality, the APD has not only exercised its hand in law enforcement but also aimed to champion awareness around the dangerous and illegal practice of impaired driving. "Every impaired driver we arrest is one less potential danger on the road," read part of the statement from APD. In addition, the initiative served as a platform for APD to implore the community to eschew drink-driving and opt for safer alternatives such as ride-sharing services or designating a sober driver.
The effort, part of a broader campaign to #EndTheStreakTX, emphasized accountability and responsible decision-making by road users. Austin Police Department's dedicated operation comes against a backdrop of persistent concerns about road safety that the APD seeks to address through a mixture of enforcement and community engagement.
