Tragedy struck Newton Township on Saturday morning when a 52-year-old man from Battle Creek died by suicide following a domestic assault incident. WOOD TV reports that Michigan State Police responded to the call around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of 6 Mile Road and Hickory Hills Drive.
The situation rapidly escalated when the suspect, reportedly in a parked car, was approached by authorities. It was then that he "exited the vehicle with a firearm to his head and fired one round," in a thwart attempt to evade the approaching law enforcement. Efforts were by authorities to provide life-saving measures, but the man was ultimately pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital, as detailed in a release by the state police obtained by WWMT News.
Meanwhile, the victim of the domestic assault was transported to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The identity of the deceased has not been made public, as per the standard practice in such cases pending notification of next of kin, according to MLive.
The Michigan State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, with an autopsy and lab analysis to swiftly follow. "An investigation remains ongoing, pending autopsy and lab analysis," authorities mentioned, and the final report is expected to be forwarded to the Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office for review, as mentioned by WWMT. This case serves to yet again highlight the often silent and unseen struggle with domestic violence and mental health crises in our communities.
