A Bronx man has been sentenced to a prison term for the killing of his girlfriend, a statement from the Bronx District Attorney's office confirmed. Jeremy Cortorreal, aged 35, resides at 647 Cauldwell Avenue and has been sentenced to 20 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter.
According to the Bronx District Attorney's Office, the sentencing took place on Wednesday. Justice Audrey Stone of the Bronx Supreme Court presided over the conviction. Cortorreal was arrested on March 23, 2023, the day after Lissette Gomez, 38 was found to have been strangled to death by him between the dates of March 21 and March 22 of the same year.
"The defendant strangled his girlfriend, and he has now been held accountable with a substantial prison sentence," stated Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark. The severity of the sentence reflects the serious nature of the crime and the consequences that accompany such acts of domestic violence. Cortorreal's guilty plea came on March 13, providing some closure to the case that stretched over two years, as per the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
The investigation was led by the Domestic Violence Bureau, with William Browne as the supervisor, and Assistant District Attorney Justin Maietta on the team. The bureau, guided by Deputy Chiefs Simon Folkard, Jena Rizzo and Chief Agata DiGiovanni under the leadership of Adrienne Giunta, Deputy Chief of the Special Victims Division; and Joseph Muroff, Chief of the Special Victims Division, prosecuted the case. NYPD Detective Brianna Constantino of the Bronx Homicide Squad, was also credited by District Attorney Clark for her diligent work on the case.
