A woman from the Bronx has been charged in connection with a shooting at a local McDonald's that left two young boys injured. The Bronx District Attorney's Office announced the indictment, stating Diamond Smith, 18, faced numerous charges, including Attempted Murder, in connection with the violence that erupted last summer in the Allerton neighborhood. The incident, which unfolded on the evening of July 6, 2024, left a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy with gunshot wounds after they were allegedly mistaken for rival street crew members.
District Attorney Darcel D. Clark highlighted the recklessness of the act, stating, "The defendant's actions allegedly led to the shooting of a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy while putting the lives of restaurant workers and customers at risk. Thankfully no one was gravely injured in this act of senseless violence," in a statement obtained by the Bronx District Attorney's Office. Smith, with a listed address on East 221st Street, was to quickly raise the bail set at $75,000 cash or $500,000 bond, after her indictment by Supreme Court Justice Kim Parker.
During the investigation, it was found that after Smith saw the boys at the McDonald's located on White Plains Road near Mace Avenue, she contacted Dreshawn Lucas, 21, who then reportedly drove another suspect, Waynol Recio, 19, to the scene. Recio is accused of having opened fire, striking the younger child three times and the older once. Both Recio and Lucas have been charged with similar offenses related to the shooting.
Assistant District Attorney Charlayne White and Newton Mendys, Chief of the Violent Enterprise Bureau, are handling the prosecution of the case, under the supervision of Denise Kodjo and Wanda Perez-Maldonado. The collaboration to thoroughly investigate and push the case forward included efforts from various professionals within the office, among them Crime Victim Advocate Norma Rivera and Digital Forensic Examiner Julie Moy. District Attorney Clark extended thanks to NYPD Detectives Alisa Colon and Robert Altieri for their significant contribution towards making the case.
Further details around the case are pending as Smith awaits her next court appearance, scheduled for June 27. The full document of the indictment can be found at the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
