The Department of Public Social Services has released new details about California's Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI), a state-funded initiative that provides financial support to eligible aged, blind, or disabled non-citizens who can't access Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to their immigration status. A recent statement by the department highlights that the program now serves approximately 9,700 individuals in Los Angeles County alone, with an average monthly support of $1,077.
Last year, Los Angeles County received over $108 million from the State to administer the program, asserting its commitment to providing a safety net for those edged out of federal aid. Despite the broad reach of CAPI, the eligibility criteria remain stringent; applicants must be 65 or older, blind, disabled, and residents of California who are ineligible for SSI/SSP solely due to their immigration status. Details sourced from the California Department of Social Services website confirm these requirements, along with the need to meet certain income and resource thresholds.
Interested parties can apply for CAPI through various means: by phone, email, mail, fax, or in person at local county social services offices. Applications and further guidance can be sought from assigned county eligibility workers. These assistants also help applicants navigate additional documentation requests, like immigration papers or rental agreements. Once applied, individuals will be informed by mail about the status of their application, whether additional information is needed, or if their case has been approved or denied.
Monthly CAPI benefit amounts pivot on factors such as marital status, living arrangements, and income. Individuals denied benefits or disputing the amount can file an appeal following instructions provided by the county. Moreover, the state recently made a one-time $600 Golden State Grant (GSG) payment to recipients to help alleviate economic strain imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a program confirmed by official sources.
