The City of Carrollton has been awarded a LEED Gold certification, taking its place among the elite of sustainable communities in the nation. According to an announcement made at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, reported by City of Carrollton, this certification comes as a result of the city's dedicated efforts to not only maintain but improve the quality of life for its residents through sustainable practices in energy, water, waste, and transportation, among other key metrics.
Carrollton, which embarked on the journey to LEED certification in May 2024, demonstrated that, having collaborated with various departments across the city, putting together comprehensive data and strategies on sustainability pays off. The efforts focused on energy and water management, waste reduction, and sustainable transportation options. This dedication has launched Carrollton into a prestigious group, joining cities like Corinth, Denton, and Plano in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex with similar recognition. According to Mayor Steve Babick, "LEED Gold certification represents Carrollton’s commitment to sustainability," as told to the City of Carrollton.
The LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certification is a globally recognized symbol of achievement in sustainable city planning. It assesses cities on various factors, including transportation, water efficiency, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions. Carrollton outperformed the requisite score for Gold status by eight points, distinguishing itself as one of only 46 cities in the United States to have reached this laudable level.
In a statement highlighted by the City of Carrollton, Environmental Services Director Cory Heiple expressed pride in the achievement, saying it is "built on a foundation of decades of strategic decisions to certify as one of the most economic, environmental, and socially sustainable cities on the global stage." The certification process has honored past efforts and illuminated paths for future investments and improvements, with aspirations to attain LEED Platinum within the next five years, emphasizing a strong commitment to continuing the city's momentum in sustainability.
