Charlotte city officials are addressing concerns about confidential information being leaked from closed City Council sessions. According to Queen City News, Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield called for an investigation, stating that details from private meetings were being shared with the media before the meetings ended, which would violate council policies and member oaths.
At the same time, Councilwoman Tiawana Brown, who has been indicted on federal fraud charges related to the alleged misuse of COVID-19 relief funds, attended the council meeting without commenting on her legal situation. According to WCNC, Brown later told reporters she would no longer speak to the media, claiming it had harmed her reputation. Despite the charges, she submitted a request for an investigation into airport operations to address safety and efficiency.
Brown is also scheduled to hold a town hall meeting to discuss local issues and city programs with residents, despite her ongoing legal proceedings.
Mayfield's concerns about internal leaks have gained attention in light of the recent retirement of Police Chief Johnny Jennings. As noted by WSOC-TV, his departure followed a $305,000 legal settlement involving the city and a former councilmember. The North Carolina State Auditor is currently investigating the matter, adding further scrutiny to the City Council.
Separately, airport workers supporting the Charlotte Acting for Safety and Efficiency Ordinance, aimed at improving their working conditions, were unable to deliver letters to council members during yesterday’s meeting, highlighting ongoing concerns about city leadership and accessibility.
