A Charlotte man is now facing charges for allegedly cooking up a fraudulent scheme to inflate his insurance payout. Gregory Alan Williamson Jr., 38, was charged with felony insurance fraud and a common law uttering misdemeanor, after special agents caught onto what officials claim was an attempt to dupe Atlantic Specialty Insurance Co. That's per the North Carolina Department of Insurance, which announced the charges.

According to the DOI, Williamson, who resides on Cross Winds Road, is accused of forging medical leave documents. The criminal summons claims that the faked paperwork led the insurance company to shell out $6,500 more than what Williamson's actual medical leave warranted. The documents recommended a leave-from-work due to injury that Williamson was allegedly not entitled to, as stated in a press release from the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

These alleged actions didn't slip by unnoticed on May 29, 2024, the date the offense reportedly took place. Williamson is set to face these accusations in the Mecklenburg County District Court on May 23, subsequent to being served with the criminal summons. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey didn't mince words when he reminded North Carolinians that such actions could have wider financial consequences.

"Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," Commissioner Causey said. "It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums," elaborating on the impacts of insurance fraud cases. In the same breath, Causey urged residents to be vigilant and proactive in reporting suspected fraudulent activity. Tips can be funneled through to the N.C.
