Cleveland State University (CSU) has just innovated its approach to alumni engagement by introducing Ava, a ground-breaking, AI-driven virtual engagement officer. Developed in partnership with Givzey, a digital fundraising and engagement firm based in Boston, Ava is engineered to substantially augment the university's communication with alumni, donors, and supporters through bespoke and dynamic interactions. As reported by CSU's official news release, she is tasked with learning about constituents’ interests and championing them towards philanthropic opportunities that resonate with their values.
In its attempt to adapt to rapidly evolving digital landscapes, CSU is joining the ranks of institutions by using cutting-edge technology to foster better community service. Julie Rehm, vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the CSU Foundation, has described the integration of Ava into the team as an initiative that aligns with their goal "to connect with our community both broadly and personally." She added, "Ava represents our commitment and desire to connect with our community both broadly and personally.” In a statement obtained by Cleveland State University News, she remarked that Ava is expected to augment the workforce and contribute significantly to the support of students and university initiatives.
The inclusion of Ava as a fully autonomous AI team member is a response to the challenges that 2025 presents, particularly in creating meaningful relationships with the larger community. The CSU Foundation Board of Directors, who oversee private donations to the university, has expressed optimism about the potential impact of this technological investment. Karen White, the Chair of the Foundation Board, stated, "We’re excited to see what our first AI team member will bring to the table." According to a CSU news release, White has complete confidence in the positive outcomes Ava will deliver for CSU, and she is proudly welcoming her to the foundation.
