Music enthusiasts in North Texas are setting their sights on Levitt Pavilion this coming Saturday. It's not just any weekend jaunt, but a chance to catch the sound waves of a musician who's made ripples beyond his New York roots. Clayton Stephenson, known for his historic turn as the first Black finalist at the prestigious Cliburn Competition, is set to take the stage on Arlington's starry night of May 3. The event, Countdown to the Cliburn, is bringing this talent to the fore, with Levitt's Executive Director, Letatia Teykl, accentuating the pavilion's commitment to "making outstanding performing arts opportunities accessible" to the community, as reported by the City of Arlington.
Stephenson's origin story—the syntactical journey from a home keyboard to the upright piano keys of a castoff school instrument—mirrors the narrative of a community-supported rise to acclaim. By harnessing opportunities through The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program at a young age, Stephenson crafted a blend of skill and scholarship, combining economics with piano performance, and earning degrees from both Harvard University and the New England Conservatory of Music. His performances, described by Gramophone as "fresh, incisive, and characterfully alive", are expected to resonate in the Levitt on the heels of jazz tunes from the Jason Schilling Quartet.
The countdown event is part of a special series, with six free performances taking place across North Texas from May 3-7, as a prelude to the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, slated for May 21 through June 7.
